Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has officially announced a new “click-to-cancel” rule aimed at simplifying the cancellation process for consumers. This final rule mandates that sellers must make it as easy to cancel subscriptions as it is to sign up, with most provisions taking effect 180 days after publication in the Federal Register. FTC Chair Lina M. Khan emphasized the importance of this rule, stating it will eliminate deceptive practices that trap consumers in unwanted subscriptions. The updated regulation will cover various negative option programs, ensuring clear disclosures and informed consent before billing. This change comes in response to a growing number of consumer complaints regarding subscription practices. For more details, you can read the official publication.
